Truckers and residents near Towanda, Pennsylvania, dealt with a road closure and a short evacuation Sunday after a trailer carrying liquefied natural gas, or LNG, overturned in Bradford County, according to WNEP.
What officials said
The trailer overturned just after 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, in the 700 block of Leisure Drive in Wysox, near Towanda.
Officials set up a half-mile exclusion zone around the scene. An exclusion zone is an area kept clear of people while emergency crews handle a hazardous materials scene. People living on Leisure Drive were advised to evacuate. Officials said there was no hazard to anyone outside the exclusion zone, WNEP reported.

Residents allowed back
In a later update, the Department of Public Safety said residents could return to their homes and that the scene was being cleared, according to WNEP.
No information about injuries had been released. Officials have not announced a cause. WNEP's report did not include details about the truck's driver or the carrier.
A reminder for tanker haulers
LNG is a cold liquid fuel that is hauled in insulated tanker trailers. Crashes involving hazardous materials bring a careful, step-by-step response, which is why zones like this one are set up while crews make the scene safe.
For truck drivers who come upon any hazmat scene:
- Stay well back and follow directions from emergency crews.
- Do not drive through a closed area or an exclusion zone.
- Follow posted detours, even if they add miles.
A detour can throw off a day's plan. The hours of service break calculator helps rework stops, and the pre-trip inspection checklist is a good refresher before any loaded run.
