Truckers and other motorists on Interstate 81 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, faced a closure of nearly nine hours Friday after a deadly seven-vehicle chain reaction crash, according to Pennsylvania State Police as reported by WGAL.
What State Police said
The crash happened around 7:20 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, on I-81 northbound near mile marker 47.1 in South Middleton Township.
State Police said the driver of a car did not slow down when traffic ahead of him slowed, and struck another vehicle. That started a chain reaction involving seven vehicles in all.

One person died. An unknown number of people were taken to a hospital, according to police.
The charge
State Police charged the car driver, a Texas man, with homicide by motor vehicle, WGAL reported. A charge is an accusation, not a conviction, and the case has not been decided in court. Big Rig Daily is not naming the driver.
The response
Nine police and fire departments, the coroner and a towing company responded, according to police. I-81 was closed in the area for nearly nine hours.
Following distance matters
Police said this crash began when traffic slowed and one vehicle did not. A loaded tractor-trailer needs far more room to stop than a car, which is why truck drivers are trained to keep extra space ahead, especially in morning traffic where speeds can drop suddenly.
- Watch well ahead for brake lights and slowing traffic.
- Keep a larger gap in heavy traffic and bad weather.
- Slow down early and smoothly when traffic bunches up.
A nine-hour closure can wreck a schedule. The hours of service break calculator helps rework the day, and the pre-trip inspection checklist covers brake checks before every run.
