Staying visible on the shoulder
The shoulder is meant for emergencies, and a truck stopped there at night can be hard to judge from a distance. When a stop cannot wait for an exit or a rest area, truck drivers can help other motorists see them:
- Turn on hazard lights right away.
- Set out warning triangles as federal rules require.
- Pull as far from the travel lanes as safely possible.
- Get to a safe spot while waiting for help, if the location allows.
Big Rig Daily's semi truck breakdown checklist covers these steps in detail, and the truck stop and weigh station map can help find a safer place to stop before you need one.
The truck laws by state guide covers move over rules and other state laws for truckers.
