Drivers who run Interstate 80 through southwest Wyoming will eventually see safety upgrades in the Green River tunnels. The Wyoming Department of Transportation was awarded more than $6 million in a competitive federal grant for the work, according to The Trucker.

The Trucker reported the award Oct. 22.

What the money will pay for

The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight and Highways Projects program, often called INFRA, according to the report.

The project covers work in both tunnels, according to The Trucker, including:

Why WYDOT says it matters

Keith Fulton, WYDOT's chief engineer, tied the project to a February 2025 crash in the tunnel that involved 16 commercial vehicles, according to The Trucker.

"With this grant, we can further improve safety in the tunnel system by utilizing modern technology and highway safety best practices," Fulton said. "We have met extensively after the tragic February 2025 crash to identify solutions like this project in an effort to prevent future severe crashes in the area."

Timeline and funding

In addition to the INFRA money, the project will draw on other federal sources and a 10 percent state match, The Trucker reported. All funds must be obligated before Sept. 30, 2027.

"Design was already underway before the grant was secured, so WYDOT is in a great position to make speedy use of these dollars," the agency said. "Eighty-seven percent of the total funding will go towards construction costs."

With this award, WYDOT has secured more than $179 million in competitive grants over the last five years, according to the report.

No construction start date was given.

A question for readers

The plan includes variable speed limit signs and electronic message boards inside the tunnels.

If you run I-80 through Green River, what safety upgrade would you most want to see?
