Ask ten truck drivers to name the best truck stop chain and the answers will vary with their routes, their schedules and what they need at the end of a long day. Instead of ranking the chains, this guide compares what three big national chains say they offer, using each company's own website and news releases. Counts change often, so the year behind each figure is included.

How this comparison works

The figures below come from the companies themselves and were checked in October 2026. Each company counts its own network in its own way, so the totals may include different kinds of locations. A larger number does not always mean more truck parking on a given highway.

Pilot Flying J

Network size

Pilot's About Us page lists more than 900 locations in 43 states and five Canadian provinces. A January 2026 Pilot news release described the network as more than 900 locations in 44 states and five Canadian provinces. The release said the network includes the Pilot, Flying J and One9 brands.

What drivers can expect

In January 2026, Pilot said new locations offer freshly prepared food, showers and restrooms, and public laundry facilities. For truck repairs, Pilot said its Southern Tire Mart at Pilot service network had more than 130 locations in the United States.

Background

Pilot says it was founded in 1958 with a single gas station in Gate City, Virginia, and opened its first travel center in Corbin, Kentucky, in 1981. The company says it has been fully owned by Berkshire Hathaway since 2024.

Love's Travel Stops

Network size

In a September 21, 2026, release, Love's said it has 681 locations in 42 states. The family-owned company is based in Oklahoma City and says it has been in business since 1964.

Truck parking

Love's says its truck parking is free for customers. In February 2026, the company said it planned to add 1,500 truck parking spaces during the year, for a total of more than 52,000 by the end of 2026. By September 21, Love's said it had added 1,262 spaces so far in 2026.

What drivers can expect

The new Love's in Kingman, Arizona, which opened in September 2026, gives a sense of a newer location. Love's listed 127 truck parking spaces, nine diesel bays, six showers, laundry facilities, a CAT Scale and a dog park. Love's also said it planned two new truck care locations and four truck washes in 2026.

TravelCenters of America (TA and Petro)

Network size

TravelCenters of America is a major nationwide chain that runs TA and Petro Stopping Centers locations. The company says it is part of bp.

What drivers can expect

TA's new travel center in Robertsdale, Alabama, on I-10 at Exit 53, shows what a new location offers. TA listed 178 truck parking spaces, including 18 Reserve-It spaces that can be booked ahead, 11 diesel fueling positions with DEF on all lanes, eight private showers, laundry facilities, a CAT Scale, a driver's lounge, a pet area and truck service with two bays. The stop also has a railroad-themed restaurant called the Derail Diner.

Rewards

TA's newsroom refers to its driver loyalty program as earnify pro, formerly known as UltraONE.

What about Buc-ee's?

Buc-ee's is a popular stop for families on road trips, but CDL Life reported in February 2026 that the Bastrop, Texas, store posted signs banning semi trucks. Big Rig Daily's report on the 11 new Buc-ee's locations expected in 2027 has the details.

How to pick the right stop for a trip

The best choice often depends on the day. A few questions can help:

Parking also has to fit around the federal hours limits. The hours of service and ELD guide explains why planning a stop before the 14-hour window closes matters, and the owner-operator vs company driver guide covers who pays for fuel and other costs on the road. Fuel prices are part of the picture too, as Big Rig Daily covered in its story on Ohio's red-dyed diesel order.
