North Dakota troopers are asking motorists to "slow down before you pass" after a crash between an SUV and a semi that was turning into a field. The North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) responded on Oct. 29 to a crash on Highway 11 between Interstate 29 and Fairmount, CDL Life reported on Oct. 30.

What the patrol said happened

Troopers said the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox SUV "attempted to pass several vehicles that were slowing for a semi turning left into a field approach." The SUV struck the truck as it made the turn. The SUV driver suffered non life threatening injuries, according to the report. CDL Life did not report injuries to the truck driver or a cause beyond the patrol's description.

A harvest season reminder

The patrol used the crash to remind everyone on the road about the risks of passing too quickly, especially at harvest time. "As harvest continues across North Dakota, drivers should expect to encounter farm equipment, trucks and other slow-moving vehicles entering and exiting fields," NDHP said. "During harvest, a field approach can be just as busy as an intersection. Pay attention to what's happening ahead, not just the vehicle directly in front of you."

The patrol's tips

Troopers offered four tips to help prevent crashes like this one:

Trucks are on the patrol's list

The patrol's message named trucks among the vehicles that enter and exit fields during harvest, and asked everyone on the road to watch for them. The report does not say whether the truck involved was hauling a harvest load.
