Michigan State Police say speed appears to be a factor in a crash on Interstate 96 in Ionia County that involved a semi and left one person dead. The crash happened about 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, on the eastbound side of the highway in Boston Township, according to WWMT. The investigation is ongoing, and this report relies on what troopers have said so far.

What troopers said

According to Michigan State Police (MSP), the driver of a semi-truck failed to stop for traffic that had come to a standstill. The semi rear-ended a Chrysler Pacifica, pushing it into a Dodge Ram pickup.

The driver of the Pacifica, a 77-year-old man from Greenville, died at the scene. His front-seat passenger, 63, also of Greenville, sustained critical but not life-threatening injuries. Two other passengers in the Pacifica and the driver of the Dodge Ram, a 33-year-old man from Zeeland, were also injured, according to troopers. The semi driver, a 35-year-old man from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was not injured.

Investigators say speed appears to be a factor in the crash. Eastbound I-96 was closed for several hours while troopers investigated and crews cleared the scene.

What is not known

The sources do not give a speed or the posted limit. They do not say what caused the traffic to stop, whether the semi driver has been cited or charged or what company the truck belonged to. Troopers describe speed as something that "appears" to be a factor, which is a preliminary finding and not a final conclusion. Big Rig Daily is not drawing any conclusions about the cause.

A reminder on stopped traffic

Stopped or slow traffic ahead is one of the situations that trucking safety guidance generally asks drivers to prepare for by keeping extra following distance and watching well ahead. Because a loaded truck needs more room to stop than a passenger car, planning ahead matters. That is general advice and is not a finding about this crash. Big Rig Daily's pre-trip inspection checklist covers items to check before a trip, including brakes.
