Great Dane Recalls 6,810 New Van Trailers Over Landing Gear Welds That Could Fail, and Truckers Who Drop Trailers Should Know

Great Dane is recalling 6,810 new van trailers because welds on the landing gear brace may fail, which could cause the landing gear to collapse. CDL Life reported the recall on Oct. 29, citing documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It is especially relevant to truckers and yard workers who drop trailers, because the risk the recall describes is for parked trailers.

What is being recalled

The recall covers certain 2027 Champion and Everest van trailers, 6,810 in all. According to the recall documents, "trailer landing gear k-brace welds may fail, resulting in the landing gear collapsing."

When the risk is highest

The recall documents say failure of the k-brace "is limited to situations where the trailer is parked without a tractor attached and without safety stands in place." The risk "may be increased during loading and unloading operations, or if the trailer is bumped by another trailer being backed into an adjoining parking space."

In plain terms, the case the recall describes is a parked trailer sitting on its own landing gear, with no tractor under the front and no safety stands.

What owners can expect

As the remedy, Great Dane will inspect the landing gear k-brace and replace it as necessary, at no charge to owners, CDL Life reported. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by Dec. 22, 2026.

Owners with questions can contact Great Dane customer service at 1-877-369-3493.

Not the same as the earlier Great Dane recall

This is a different recall from the 69 trailer Great Dane coupler recall Big Rig Daily covered on Oct. 27. That earlier recall was reported alongside a Peterbilt and Kenworth sleeper bunk recall.

What the report does not say

The recall documents, as relayed by CDL Life, do not say how many failures have happened, whether anyone has been hurt, or which production dates are covered beyond "certain 2027" Champion and Everest vans. Owners who are unsure whether a trailer is included should contact Great Dane with the vehicle identification number rather than guess.

Quick facts

Big Rig Daily has also covered the Great Dane coupler recall and the Peterbilt and Kenworth bunk recall. For a closer look at what comes before a trip, see the pre-trip inspection checklist.

A question for readers

Should every drop yard require safety stands under a parked trailer, recall or no recall?
