Wabash is recalling nearly 500 new van trailers over a wheel problem that could lead to a loss of control. Land Line reported Oct. 30 that the recall covers model year 2027 van trailers that may have incorrect wheel bearing lubricant.

What the problem is

According to Land Line, the wrong lubricant can cause the wheel end to seize, locking up the wheel. As a result, a truck driver can lose handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Most of the trailers being recalled are expected to have the defect, the report said. By comparison, Land Line reported that only about 10% of the population in Great Dane's separate recalls is estimated to have a defect.

No reports of problems

Wabash has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the issue, according to Land Line.

What owners should do

Wabash dealers will replace the wheel bearing lubricant at no cost to owners. Letters notifying owners will be mailed on Nov. 25.

Land Line did not report how many trailers are in service with fleets or whether any have been delivered to customers. Owners who are unsure whether their trailer is covered can use the recall number above when they call.

The Great Dane recalls

The same Land Line report covered two separate Great Dane recalls: nearly 7,000 model year 2027 Everest and Champion van trailers, plus nearly 1,000 landing gear assemblies, over landing gear k-brace welds that could fail and cause the landing gear to collapse. Big Rig Daily covered that earlier in Great Dane's recall of 6,810 trailers.

A reminder about pre-trips

Truckers can review how a walk-around works in Big Rig Daily's pre-trip inspection checklist. The Land Line report does not say whether a walk-around would reveal this defect, and the remedy it describes is the dealer replacement.
