Roehl Offers Experienced CDL-A Truck Drivers a $10,000 Retention Incentive, Paid $500 at a Time

Roehl Transport is offering experienced CDL-A truck drivers up to $10,000 to stay, paid in $500 installments. The company announced the new Retention Incentive this week, according to the Commercial Carrier Journal, which lists Roehl at No. 57 on its Top 250 carriers.

How the payments work
Experienced CDL-A truckers get their first $500 payment after hauling their first load, then another $500 every 10,000 miles, up to a total of $10,000, CCJ reported. Roehl says the structure is designed to reward truckers for building a lasting career, unlike many sign-on bonuses in the industry.
By arithmetic that is not Roehl's, that works out to 20 payments of $500: the first after one load and 19 more at 10,000-mile intervals. If payments land at exact 10,000-mile marks, a trucker would reach the full $10,000 at roughly 190,000 miles.

Who qualifies and when
The incentive applies to experienced CDL-A truckers who join Roehl beginning Nov. 2 and through the week of Dec. 14, CCJ reported. It covers most Roehl fleets.
What Roehl says
"We recently enhanced our pay package with retention incentives for current drivers because we believe experience, commitment and longevity should be rewarded," said Tim Norlin, vice president of driver employment for Roehl Transport. "This new $10,000 retention incentive extends that philosophy to experienced drivers looking for a company that truly invests in their success."
The move follows two driver pay increases at Roehl so far this year, CCJ reported.
Why retention is in focus
CCJ noted that driver retention, pay and the driver shortage took three of the 10 spots on the American Transportation Research Institute's annual Top Industry Issues report, released earlier this month.
What the report does not say
The CCJ item does not explain how miles are counted toward each payment, how the payments are taxed or what happens if a trucker leaves before reaching $10,000. Readers weighing an offer can ask Roehl for the written terms.

A question for readers
Would a payment every 10,000 miles keep you with a carrier longer than a lump-sum sign-on bonus?
