Truckers with a route over Wyoming's Teton Pass have a new step to take before the climb, and a seasonal ban is coming. Since Oct. 1, the Wyoming Department of Transportation has required anyone operating a vehicle weighing at least 10,000 pounds, towing a trailer or driving an RV to complete a self-certification through its WY22 Safe Pass program, Transport Topics reported Monday, Oct. 26.

The existing gross vehicle weight limit on Wyoming Highway 22 over the pass is 60,000 pounds.

Why the extra step

WYDOT says WY22 over Teton Pass "tests even the most experienced drivers." Its grades of 10% are "nearly double the steepness of most mountain passes," and sharp curves add to the risk, the agency said.

"Ignoring these safety materials and warnings could put your life, or someone else's, at risk," said Wyoming Highway Patrol Capt. Marc Russell.

How to self-certify

The process takes about 10 minutes:

  1. Go to safepass.wyoroad.info.
  2. Review the safety videos, maps and braking information.
  3. Complete the series of acknowledgments.

Nearly 2,000 drivers completed it in September, before the requirement took effect, Transport Topics reported.

No trailers from Nov. 15

No trailers of any kind are allowed on the pass from Nov. 15 to April 1. WYDOT encourages commercial drivers to use U.S. 26 through Swan Valley, Idaho, instead.

Runaway systems on the way down

There is an eastbound runaway vehicle escape ramp at Milepost 8.3, on the left side of the highway, and a vehicle arrestor system farther down at Milepost 7.44, according to WYDOT. Black-and-white signs now tell drivers where to check their brakes.

Big Rig Daily explained how runaway truck ramps work. Winter rules for other states are in truck chain laws by state, and parking is on the Wyoming truck stop and weigh station map. Big Rig Daily also covered more than $6 million for Green River tunnel safety on I-80, and the Wyoming truck towing and mobile repair directory lists help on the road.
