Conyers, Georgia Re-Approves a 100-Space Truck Lot After a 2024 Permit Expired; Truckers Cannot Sleep There

The Conyers City Council in Georgia has approved a permit for a 100-space tractor-trailer parking lot, but truckers should not count on it as a place to sleep. Council members voted 4-2 on Oct. 21 to approve a special use permit for the facility, the Rockdale Citizen reported on Oct. 31. It is a second approval of a project the city first permitted in 2024, after that earlier permit expired. Parts of the Rockdale Citizen article are behind a paywall, so this report sticks to what Big Rig Daily could confirm.

Where the lot would go
The facility would sit on about 8.6 acres at 2019 East Park Drive NE in the Conyers-Rockdale Industrial Park, near Sigman Road and East Park Drive.
A re-approval after a 2024 permit expired
According to the Rockdale Citizen, the council approved a special use permit for the same 8.58-acre parcel in 2024 (Ordinance 1356, which returned for a second reading on April 3, 2024). That permit later expired because the project was not completed within the required timeframe. At the Oct. 21 hearing the owner said delays in engineering and construction approvals, including stormwater management plans, contributed to the expiration. He now says he has the necessary construction permits and is ready to start building, so the council voted again. The new request was approved as Ordinance 1484.

The conditions
The conditions of the permit prohibit sleeping in vehicles on the property. The owner told the council the lot is mainly for tractor-trailers from his own trucking company and his partner's business, and that some spaces may be rented to other local truck drivers. The reports Big Rig Daily reviewed did not give fees or hours.
The vote and the concerns
Mayor Connie Alsobrooks and council member Sherri Washington voted against the request, and the other four council members voted for it. The permit passed despite concerns about more truck traffic, road deterioration and possible effects on nearby neighborhoods and schools.
Why parking keeps coming up
Parking is one of the most common complaints from truckers, and proposals for new lots often draw pushback from neighbors. Big Rig Daily has covered the issue in a report on a $23 million truck parking project in Arkansas and in a report on truck parking spaces and fuel passes in Florida. The guide to truck parking tips and apps lists ways to find a spot.
